Chemistry Nobel, cell-model data and new research programmes

The chemistry Nobel, data for cell models, vaccine and resistance research, a discovery partnership and materials-testing funds.

1. Kagan and Soai receive the chemistry Nobel1

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on 7 October that Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai will share the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discoveries involving nonlinear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis. Their work explains how reactions can amplify a preference for one molecular mirror image, addressing the emergence of homochirality. The Academy connects these discoveries with the design of reactions used to manufacture pharmaceuticals. The award recognises foundational chemistry developed over decades; it is a scientific community milestone, rather than the announcement of a new drug or a newly demonstrated treatment.1

2. NIH joins a coordinated effort to prepare data for cell models2

NIH announced on 7 October that its Bio Genesis Mission will coordinate with the Department of Energy, Biohub and other partners to prepare data for predictive models of human biology. The effort brings together existing biomedical datasets, national repositories and research programmes, with NIH and Biohub working on standardising suitable training data. The aim is to model cellular responses to disease and interventions and help prioritise experiments. This is a coordination and data-development announcement: universal cell prediction remains a research objective, and the release does not report validated performance or a newly available finished model.2

3. UK funds vaccine platforms and antimicrobial-resistance research3

UKRI and government partners announced more than £54 million for 18 research and innovation projects on 7 October. The programmes address epidemic preparedness, antimicrobial resistance and veterinary vaccinology. Named projects include AI-designed vaccine antigens at Cambridge and an mRNA vaccine platform at the Pirbright Institute, alongside work on antibiotic stewardship and environmental resistance. These investments connect computational design and vaccine technology with research across human, animal and environmental health. The announcement identifies funded projects and their intended work; improved outbreak protection or vaccine effectiveness has yet to be demonstrated by those projects.3

4. Enamine and Ewha plan an iterative design-and-testing partnership4

Enamine and Ewha Womans University’s Global AI Drug Discovery Center signed a memorandum of understanding on 7 October linking computational design with synthesis and biological testing. Enamine says the centre will gain access to its building blocks, screening compounds and make-on-demand chemical spaces. Selected molecules can enter biochemical, biophysical, cellular and early ADME assays, with results informing subsequent designs. The planned collaboration addresses whether proposed molecules can actually be made and tested. Joint research and training are also envisaged. The agreement sets out intended cooperation; it does not yet demonstrate faster discovery or successful drug candidates.4

5. DOE offers funding for silicon-carbide reactor cladding tests5

The US Department of Energy announced on 5 October a funding opportunity offering up to $50 million over three years for silicon-carbide nuclear fuel cladding research. The programme targets fabrication of 12-foot fuel rods for irradiation testing in research reactors. Such tests would generate performance evidence needed for licensing and eventual commercial deployment of a different barrier between nuclear fuel and coolant. Applications are due on 7 December. This is competitive research funding being offered, rather than awards already made, completed reactor testing or proof that the material is ready for commercial use.5
