1. NSF plans new instruments and experiments in research funding1
NSF announced plans on 8 October for an Office of Metascience, new research prizes and an expanded support network for its X-Labs initiative. Of particular relevance to automated chemistry, it anticipates investing up to $75 million over five years in instruments designed for digital operation, through a forthcoming opportunity linked to its Programmable Cloud Laboratories Network. The planned instruments would extend laboratory automation and data-driven experimentation. These are programme plans and anticipated investments; the instrument call has not yet been released, and this announcement does not establish that the proposed equipment or scientific gains already exist.1
2. DOE announces new awards for AI-assisted scientific research2
The US Department of Energy announced twelve new Phase II Genesis Mission project awards, totalling $159 million, on 8 October. The portfolio includes computational enzyme design at the University of Washington, electrochemical rare-earth separation through ligand design at Illinois, and inverse design of quantum magnets at Oak Ridge. Other projects address computing, accelerators, fusion and related infrastructure. The announcement moves these teams into a funded development stage and identifies concrete chemistry and materials problems. Their proposed models, separation processes and designed materials remain research objectives; the awards themselves are not evidence of completed scientific performance.2
3. NIH launches investigator recruitment and outlines research-rigor support3
NIH announced Generation Discovery on 8 October, a recruitment initiative intended to bring 100 early-career principal investigators into its intramural research programme over three years. It also reported support for 1,648 early-stage investigators through R01-equivalent awards in fiscal 2026. Alongside these workforce announcements, NIH outlined plans for a metascience office and a programme supporting reproducibility through research, partnerships, infrastructure and training. These developments concern the people and evidence systems underpinning biomedical discovery. The recruitment target describes planned appointments, while the grant count is an agency-reported funding result.3
4. EU clinical-trial application advice will become a permanent service4
EMA announced on 8 October that the ACT EU advice pilot will become permanent from January 2027. Coordinated by the Heads of Medicines Agencies through its Clinical Trials Coordination Group, the procedure gives sponsors consolidated technical and regulatory feedback from participating member states before applications enter the Clinical Trials Information System. It extends support that previously operated at national level, offering developers a continuing route to clarify submission questions. Existing pilot applications will be managed through the end of 2026. Updated guidance and templates are due in January; a report covering approximately 30 pilot applications is expected before year-end.4
5. Danaher plans an autonomous laboratory for affinity reagents5
Danaher announced on 7 October that it plans an AI-assisted laboratory at Abcam to design, make and test affinity reagents, including antibodies. The company expects operation at scale in early 2027. Its proposed workflow combines technologies from several Danaher businesses with robotic orchestration developed with Automata, feeding experimental results back into subsequent designs while scientists retain key decisions. This connects computational discovery to repeated physical testing of useful research reagents. The facility remains planned: faster development and increased output are company targets for the future workflow.5
